 THOUGHTS OF CHRISTMAS
Back to Full Blog

WITH CHRISTMAS ALMOST HERE
AND ALL THE STORES DECKED OUT SOME TIMES I WONDER DO WE REALLY
KNOW THE REAL MEANING OF THE DAY? THE FOLLOWING IS A E-MAIL
FROM ONE OF MY READERS AND I WOULD LIKE TO SHARE IT WITH YOU

'Twas the month before Christmas
When all through our land,
Not a Christian was praying
Nor taking a stand.
See the PC Police had taken away,
The reason for Christmas - no one could say.
The children were told by their schools not to sing,
About Shepherds and Wise Men and Angels and things.
It might hurt people's feelings, the teachers would say
December 25th is just a "Holiday".

Yet the shoppers were ready with cash, checks and credit
Pushing folks down to the floor just to get it!
CDs from Madonna, an X BOX, an I-pod
Something was changing, something quite odd!
Retailers promoted Ramadan and Kwanzaa
In hopes to sell books by Franken & Fonda.
As Targets were hanging their trees upside down
At Lowe's the word Christmas - was no where to be found.
At K-Mart and Staples and Penny's and Sears
You won't hear the word Christmas; it won't touch your ears.

Inclusive, sensitive, Di-ver-si-ty
Are words that were used to intimidate me.
Now Daschle, Now Darden, Now Sharpton, Wolf Blitzen
On Boxer, on Rather, on Kerry, on Clinton!
At the top of the Senate, there arose such a clatter
To eliminate Jesus, in all public matter.
And we spoke not a word, as they took away our faith
Forbidden to speak of salvation and grace.

The true Gift of Christmas was exchanged and discarded
The reason for the season, stopped before it started.
So as you celebrate "Winter Break" under your "Dream Tree"
Sipping your Starbucks, listen to me.
Choose your words carefully, choose what you say

Shout MERRY CHRISTMAS,
Not Happy Holiday!

May I Be the first to say Merry Christmas
Happy feast of the lighting of the candles to my Jewish friends
And HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ALL
I do believe in Christmas but we must respect all Americans and their beliefs.
I do agree there is too much buy me this and get me that ratter than the real meaning of Christmas which is to show kindness to those that do not have any thing this year. The ones in Nursing homes without family; The mother in a shelter running from abuse, The old person forgotten by family and friends or w/o any
We are suppose to remember the birth of the child in a stable so long ago and the kings who gave gifts; but the little drummer boy who only could play on his drum is the real meaning.
AND SO WITH OUT ANY MORE WRITING TODAY
I WILL GO AWAY
WITH HAPPY THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS FOR YOU
HERE'S WISHING YOU THE BEST OF CHRISTMAS
AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR TOO
THE LIGHTING OF THE CANDLES FOR OUR JEWISH FRIENDS.

AGAIN, MAY I INVITE YOU TO COMMENT ON MY BLOG

Hi Big Dean.....told you I'd pop over! I'm really glad I did....that poem was FANTASTIC! Thank-you for sharing it with us. It held alot of meaning for me as that is always how I have felt. I make almost all of my gifts as I spin yarn and weave and those tend to be my gifts of time to loved ones. So let me be another to shout(although I don't shout...I'm pretty quiet)Merry Christmas!!!

Thank you for your comments C.M.
The Christmas season seems to bring the best in folks and the worst in folks. I have seen them push and fight over a toy
Do they really want it for their 2 year old or for themselves The writer has touched on some really important matters and how we have lost the real meaning of the season.
I do hope your Christmas is blessed and happy filled with family and friends and maybe a warm fireplace
Thanks for the pretty picture.

BIG DEAN:

Here are some comments I got online about the Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays controversy.

Merry Christmas vs. Happy Holidays?

1.What is the big deal? WalMart and other stores have decided to use 'Happy Holidays' as their official store greeting. Why are people upset over this? Is it really a big deal if someone you don't know, that doesn't know you or your beliefs, gives you a warm friendly greeting. Yes, most people in America celebrate Christmas, but there are many Holidays between November and December and we should celebrate them all.
WalMart is a GLOBAL company, and like it or not, there are plenty of people in the world who don't celebrate Christmas. WalMart wants those people to feel just as welcome as the ones who do celebrate Christmas. Is this really what things have come to in America? We are complaining about someone saying 'Happy Holidays'. There are so many more important things to worry about.

2.I dont really care if its Happy Holidays or Merry Christmas that retail stores use to greet people. I'm a Catholic and do personally prefer Merry Christmas but if I'm greeted Happy Holidays I wouldnt be upset. I was greeted to have a happy holiday and I'm cool with that. So I suppose people who are greeted Merry Christmas who prefers to be greeted Happy Holidays shouldn't be upset either, because its a friendly greeting too.

To each his own, but if you would really think about it, there are more Christians than not who are shopping at Walmart in US and Foriegn Countries. Mexico for example is predominantly Catholics, and they would be rather greeted Merry Christmas than Happy Holidays.

3. I use Happy Holidays unless someone else feels the need to state their religion to strangers. Then I feel free to express mine to them. Personally, I think it's silly. Why not use the expression that is universal? Why choose to be seperatist? I thought the holiday was about togetherness.)

4. It's not the happy holidays that is the problem. It's that, that is where it began. Someone got upset that they were wished a merry christmas and now it has to be happy holidays. from that point on it's just snowballed (no pun intended) out of control. I don't mind the happy holidays, I mind that the person who gets offended over merry christmas throws a fit. If i can let it slide, why can't they? If I can be o.k. with a friendly greeting meant with good intentions, why can't they? Now anything that makes an official christmas statement is offensive.

5. I am Christian and celebrate Christmas. So, I say,"Merry Christmas!" I have a cousin who is Jewish, when I send her a Christmas card, I wish them a Merry Christmas and a Happy Hanukkah. She is a convert to Judaism which most of the family does not agree with. She appreciates me including the Jewish holiday in my card. I also do not mind people responding with Happy Holidays or whatever their belief is.

6. As a non-Christian I am put off by how many people assume that I celebrate Christmas. I don't care if people say it to me that much but I still would prefer Happy Yule. So I am every pleased that at least at Wal-Mart it will be Happy Holidays.

7. Although Walmart encourages the use of "Happy Holidays" they haven't forbidden their employees from saying "Merry Christmas". The reason this thing has turned into a huge controversy is because the media tried to insinuate that Walmart wouldn't allow employees to use the greeting they choose. Since I'm Jewish, I always say Happy Holidays, and often am given a cold, defensive response in return. Perhaps people should realize that when someone says Happy Holidays, maybe they are trying to be inclusive, rather than "politically correct", and accept the good wishes.
